SharePoint Page Authoring

One of the greatest improvements in Modern SharePoint is the page authoring experience. Things that were once difficult are now straightforward and accessible to everyone. In this video I demonstrate the basics of SharePoint Page authoring. I talk about sections, web-parts, page layouts and give a few tips to help you go from zero to hero in less than 10 minutes.

Here are some things to consider when developing page content for your SharePoint Intranet.

Vertical Sections

When added, a vertical section appears on the right hand side of the page. In the section configuration you can set whether the vertical section appears first or last in a mobile view. If people are frequently accessing from mobile devices, use the Quick Links webpart to make navigation easy. Use a background shade to help differentiate between the main page content and supporting links and content.

Page Templates

Use Page Templates to create consistent content. Design your page, then select the drop down next to “Save as draft” to reveal the “Save as Template” option. Templates can include all of the page design elements and webparts. You can also use page properties to set default metadata for pages created from the template

Be Consistent

People who view your content will love you if the content is consistent. If the link to supporting information is always in the same place and is populated, they will be able to find it easily.

Stay relevant and accurate

Nothing puts people off faster than out of date or incorrect content. Require content owners to review content regularly and also provide a way for people to either correct details themselves or provide feedback. The less friction, the better.

A picture paints 1000 words

Use images and icons to reduce the volume of words on a page. This helps make it quick for someone to consume the content and helps make the page visual appealing. Extra points for using nice photos from your work environment and not just stock photos.

Test your design

Show your design to other people and ask for feedback. Test it on the devices people will be using. Use this feedback to improve your design.

Now have fun and get creative!
