SharePoint tip: Create a News Post button

I love the simplicity of Modern SharePoint News Posts, they make it easy to create and publish nice looking news posts with rich content. There are a few things that could be improved, for example creating a site where many people can contribute News Posts means the home page of the site is also editable. Making the home page read only removes the Add button, so another button is needed to allow someone to create a News post.

Option 1: Use the ‘See All’ URL

To get the URL:

  • Add a News webpart to a page
  • Click the ‘See All’ option and copy the URL

This option is simple, but the user is still required to click New > News Post to create a new News Post. The next option avoids this problem.

Option 2: Use the Create Page from Template URL

The template page creation URL looks like this. Thanks to Rien (see comment below) for the URL parameters to set the promoted state to 1 to create a news post. Leave this off to create a page.

https://tenantname.sharepoint.com/sites/SiteName/_layouts/15/CreatePageFromTemplate.aspx?source=%2Fsites%2Fsitename&promotedState=1

Note the tenantname and sitename must match your environment.

Now you have the URL, simply add a Button or Quick Link webpart for your community to click and create a new News Post. If the site has Page Templates, they will appear as options when the link is clicked.

I hope you find this helpful and it helps make a friendlier Intranet for your community.

  1. Thanks for the tip, but with this direct url, you create a page, not a news post. You need to add ?source=%2Fsites%2Fsitename&promotedState=1 or copy the url for your tenant while start a new newspost.
